Steps to Create Your Fire Escape Plan
Identify All Exits 🚪+ 🪟
Identify All Exits
Everyone in the family should know two ways out of every room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside can open. If a room has a window air conditioner, make sure there is still a second way out of the room.
Designate a Meeting Spot 🌳📫
Family Meeting Place
Have an outside meeting place (something permanent, like a tree, light pole, mailbox) a safe distance in front of the home where firefighters will easily find you.
Practice Your Plan 🏃🏠
Practice Your Plan
Now that you have a plan, practice it to make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go!
How to have a drill:
- Push the smoke alarm button to start the drill
- Practice what to do in case there is smoke. Get low and go. Get out fast.
- Practice going out different doors that lead outside.
- Close doors behind you as you leave.
- Go to your outside meeting place.
Practice your home escape drill at least twice a year with everyone in your home. Practice at night and during the daytime. After you have practiced, evaluate it and discuss what works and what needs to be improved. Improve and practice again.
